How Having a Family Member with a Disability has Impacted My Faith

One of the things I love most about my family is how unique it is. My youngest brother, Jeremy has Down Syndrome. While Jeremy is technically my stepbrother and came into my life when I was a teenager, he is one of the greatest gifts that has been given to me and my family.

Some people look at Down Syndrome as a true cross to carry, having a brother with an extra chromosome has been amazing. Jeremy is the embodiment of love. There's not a single person he dislikes and he splashes his love on everyone he comes in contact with! He loves the Lord and loves his family along with the Washington Commanders. He is the personification of joy.
Our faith teaches us about unconditional love, about seeing within others their true dignity and Jeremy does that for me. My faith has been greatly impacted by having Jeremy as a brother because he has shown me this unconditional love and dignity. He always smiles, always tells me that he loves me and seriously has the best laugh.

Every year at Christmas, Jeremy performs a Christmas Concert for us in which he turns on music and conducts to the songs that are playing and every year he asks me to help get the songs and make programs so that everyone can enjoy the concert. In his vulnerability in asking for help, he shows me that all of us need each other, that we're part of the communion of saints! Plus, he knows and trusts that I'll help him. It reminds me of the love of our Father. If we just ask, He will help.

In so many ways, Jeremy's child like nature reminds me that we are called to be like children in front of the Lord. He is the gift we don't deserve and a true reminder of the Father's love for us!
